PostSubject: Syncing more often than once a day.   Thu Jan 15, 2009 10:51 pm

I'm running a DHCP server with about 5500 reservations and about 3500 random leases. I'm running through a senerio I'm trying to address. If server one exports at 1AM and server2 imports at 1:10am, if server1 then fails at 12 noon, server2 is short on knowing about any leases that has taken place after the sync. If my leases are set to 5 days or more the current lease should be fine but what happens if the server hands out ip's that have already been handed out by server1 after the sync. Pinging the clients doesn't seem to help, most have a firewall enabled. So that leads me back to syncing more often, is there a way to get server2 to sync more often? Server1 can be configured by the task manager to do so already, but I was having trouble figuring out what to do about the second...

Thanks for the help.
Mike

BTW - This is a great program!

The main DHCP-service will stop responding to requests while exporting the DHCP-database. That is maybe not a big problem, since it usually takes less than a minute.
The other problem is that while the socondary DHCP-service is importing the database it enters running state, leving you with two DHCP-services running at the same time while importing, that could take 10 minutes if you have a huge amount of reservations and leases.
I think that this will be a bigger problem than you wrote about.
It depends on how many new leases you have each day, if you have an enviroment with wery few new leases (not renewal of existing leases) you probably can handle the problem with these computers.
Consider how often this problem will occur, how often has your main DHCP-service been down?
But if you users want this option I can implement it in a later version.

I think you are right, this would be a bigger problem than the other.
Thinking about it, dealing with a few duplicate ip's during what would have been a major problem is minor.

Thank you for sharing this program, I'm looking forward to putting this into production in our network next week. I'll let you know how it goes.
