Lease changes from secondary to primary Empty
PostSubject: Lease changes from secondary to primary   Lease changes from secondary to primary Icon_minitimeFri Jan 08, 2010 8:24 pm

Here is the scenario:

Everything is chugging away just fine, when all of the sudden, your primary DHCP server crashes. Luckily, DHCP-Redundancy swings into action and you're able to operate for a week until your new primary DHCP server arrives. Now you're ready to bring the primary online. How do you get all the scope info from the secondary to your new primary?

Do you recommend simply setting up the new server as the "secondary", failing over to it, then uninstalling DHCP-Redundancy?

Thanks.

1. on your backup server, run:
netsh dhcp server export "DHCP-Backup.txt" all
(the DHCP-server service has to be running)

2. install the DHCP-server service on your new main server, but dont configure any scopes or settings, copy the file DHCP-Backup.txt from the backup-server to the new main.

3. on your new main server run:
netsh dhcp server import "DHCP-Backup.txt" all

What about failing from secondary to primary when the primary has just been offline for a few days. There will lease changes on the secondary and one or more scopes on the primary. How do you bring them into sync?

Thanks.

As I wrote in an earlier topic:

If this is a problem depends on how your system looks like. If you have many new computers coming and going every day this can be a problem.
But if you have about the same computers coming and going and you have longer lease time than the time you think is a possible outtage of the primary DHCP, it wont be a problem. And if you set the Conflict Detection Attemps to 2 as suggested in the installing instructions it is even better.
One thing to remember is to not make any reservations on the backup DHCP when it is up, they will be lost when the primary DHCP comes up again.

About the problem of a long outage of the primary DHCP server :

is it possible that the backup server, when see online the primary server, check for the duration of the outage, and if it is > of 1 day ( or a configurable numbers of hours ) do the export of its db and run remotley ( psexec like ) the command netsh dhcp server import on the primary server ?

'nothing is impossible for those who do not have to do' :-)

You have done a great job.

Thanks

Interesting feature, but I dont know if I have the time and effort to develop DHCP-Redundancy with more versions.
The current version works fine, many people use it and I have got lots of possitive feedback, but, as I said, time and effort...
